Sand River Masai Mara

Masai Mara National Reserve
Situated on a secluded and picturesque site on the banks of the splendid Sand River, Sand River Masai Mara is built in the elegant style reminiscent of late 1920’s safaris. These were the glory days of great safaris, patronized by the rich, the beautiful and the famous. Here at Sand River Masai Mara you can sink back in time and savor the same glamorous ambience, unspoiled scenery and spectacular game viewing as the Hollywood stars, royalty and celebrities of that classic era of African adventure. Sand River Masai Mara is an ideal destination, at any time of the year, for those wishing to enjoy exceptional game-viewing. The National Reserve is best known for its large concentrations of big cats, such as leopard, cheetah and, of course, lion. The wildlife is world-renowned, with the so-called “Big Five”- buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhinoceros – evident throughout the year. The “Big Nine” - including cheetah, zebra, giraffe and hippo - extends this experience. Even the dramatic arrival of the Annual Migration merely adds to an already abundant resident wildlife that awaits discovery. Sand River Camp sits on the migration route of the immense herds

that trek between the Serengeti and Masai Mara every year following the rains to greener pastures. During this time, you literally become part of the wildlife drama being played out, as sprawling lines of wildebeest cross the Sand River and weave their way right through the camp. Often from the privacy and comfort of your veranda you can steep yourself in this wildlife spectacle and feel a part of this natural phenomenon.
Comprising sixteen tented accommodations, Sand River Masai Mara replicates the heyday of exclusive permanent tented camps of the late 1920’s. Divided into two separate but adjoining campsites - “Sand River” with ten tents and “Little Sand River” with six. The tents are all very spacious and comfortable with four poster beds, carved writing desks and richly textured fabrics. Generous en-suite bathrooms feature large bathtubs as well as delightful outdoor showers. There is also an expansive family tent comprising a double and twin en-suite room which are joined by a lounge area. Each of the “camps” has its own main dining area and access to a shared swimming pool. Sand River Masai Mara provides an atmosphere of exclusivity and classic opulence.
The Masai Mara, in the southwest of Kenya, is famous for its astounding variety of wildlife. With both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe and elephant, to name a few, as well as over 500 bird species, the vast fertile plains are dense with game. The area has been classified among the “Seven Wonders of the World” due to the extraordinary annual migration from July to November when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebra cross between the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in search of greener pastures. The Masai Mara National Reserve itself, measuring 583 mi², is part of the Greater Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem, much of which falls under ownership of Masai pastoralist communities. Some of the ecosystem’s prime game viewing lies within the conservation areas surrounding the Reserve. These conservancies have been set up by the private sector in partnership with local Masai landowners to conserve the larger Masai Mara ecosystem by extending the protection area for wildlife and standardizing income distribution and eco-system management.
