Lake Manyara Lodge
Lake Manyara National Park
Set in the heart of a mahogany forest, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is the only permanent lodge in the park of the same name. Designed to exert minimal impact on the environment, the lodge is situated in the park’s south-western region. Most people think that the famous tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara have developed their climbing habit to get away from annoying insects. We have our own theory – they are jealous of the ten magnificent treehouse suites! Cradled in the boughs of an ancient mahogany forest, the lodge blends into the natural beauty of its breathtaking surroundings. Each treehouse suite features generous decks suspended above the forest floor and large windows invite the lush forest inside. The classically elegant bedrooms are fitted with contemporary furnishing in neutral colors and textures, overhead fans and billowing mosquito nets. The bathrooms have freestanding baths with a forest view and an outdoor shower. Overlooking a forest boma, or outdoor dining area, lined with traditional dugout canoes, guest areas are characterized by soaring spaces that house local artworks and tactile fabrics. An interactive kitchen allows you to observe the….
preparation of delicious dishes that are enjoyed in the theatrical boma or on the open dining decks, with spectacular forest views. The lodge has a safari shop featuring signature community craftwork and a range of lodge branded safari clothing.
Tanzania’s Lake Manyara National Park offers a true wilderness experience in diverse habitats, from its Rift Valley soda lake to dense woodlands and steep mountainsides. The Great Rift Valley is at its most impressive here, with the escarpment dropping some 1,640 feet down to the lakeshore. Apart from its spectacular natural setting, the park is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant families it was established to protect. The shores of the lake, encrusted with pink flamingo, attract more than 400 species of birds, many of them waterfowl or migrants. Large herds of buffalo, cheetah, Masai giraffe and impala roam the lake’s shores and the forested valley slopes. Troops of several hundred olive baboon appear alongside Sykes monkey and short-eared galago. Cape clawless otter, Egyptian mongoose, hippo and klipspringer are other park residents.
As dawn breaks over the Rift Valley, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your guide will discuss what you hope to see that day over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks, then you set out to explore the remote southern reaches of the Park in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in search of elephant, lion or the flocks of flamingo on the shores of the lake. After a break for hot drinks and a snack, you return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options.
Relax in your leafy treehouse until it is time for lunch or watch your meal being prepared in the interactive kitchen. Then cool off with a refreshing dip in the lodge pool or indulge in a siesta. After late afternoon tea, you head off in search of wildlife once again with an afternoon game drive. The herds head out to the Lake to drink and bathe before settling down for the night while predators are warming up for the night's hunting. Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners as the sun sinks beneath the endless plains before heading back to the luxury of the lodge for a mouthwatering dinner in the lamp lit boma.
For an unforgettable experience consider spending an evening under a blanket of a million stars. After your evening game drive*, you will be ushered to a secluded and exclusive sleepout spot within the Lake Manyara National Park. Here, luxuriously adorned beds, swathed in romantic netting, as well as a private campfire (and all the amenities you require to feel comfortable) await you. After a scrumptious dinner and a restful evening spent serenaded by the sounds of the Tanzanian wilderness, you will be collected and taken back to the lodge, in time for your morning game drive. A guide will be your host for the evening and there will be guards on patrol throughout the night to ensure your safety.
