MONACHIRA CAMP

Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve

Monachira is named after the Monachira channel which flows past the island on which the camp is situated. The camp is raised on wooden decks to give one a view of the floodplains and wetlands which stretch out in front of camp. Monachira offers water activities, island nature walks and wildlife drives. Based in the Moremi Game Reserve, these activities will take you to some of the more remote areas in the delta. A motorboat ride promises to enthrall you and captivate you, with the chance of seeing iconic wildlife from the river. Glide on quiet mokoro’s through the water lilies and view wildlife from below as you sail along at water level height. The camp is situated on the edge of the Monachira channel not far from the famous Gudigwa heronries, offering great viewing of this amazing nesting ground of thousands of herons, egrets and storks. A chance to see elephants, lions, leopard and a wide variety of Okavango species on the islands and floodplains along the permanent channels of the Monachira River. Also a chance to see the elusive Pels Fishing Owl and rare sitatunga, a semi aquatic swamp antelope. Inspired by classic safaris and infused…

with a modern flair, Monachira Camp seamlessly blends nostalgia with contemporary luxuries. The luxury tents feature en-suite bedrooms with a romantic king-size bed that can be separated into two twin beds. In addition to an inside shower, each unit has an open-air shower with hot and cold running water. Completely private from the casual passerby only the African sun or stars can see you as you rinse off the day’s adventures. The private patio area in front of your tent provides the perfect viewing spot from which to watch the African bush unfold in front of you. Shaded by the island forests, the tents are ideally positioned overlooking the vast floodplains while offering unparalleled views of the wildlife frequenting the surrounding wetlands.

Communal spaces include a beautifully appointed lounge tent, a dining tent with an adjacent outdoor dining area, a fire pit, a shaded pool deck with a plunge pool and sun loungers ideal for cooling down between safari activities, and a bar that’s perfectly located for sunset drinks while gazing out over the Monachira Channel.

Game drives are conducted in the mornings and afternoon/evenings at camp. They usually last about three hours each and are conducted along the river systems and flood plains around the camp. The wildlife in the area is prolific and chances are good to see wild dog, large prides of lions, big herds of buffalo and elephant, leopard, cheetah and all the plains animals that occur here. Night drives are conducted in the early evening offering one a chance to see the smaller more nocturnal animals with spotlights.
