Sitatunga Private Island is an extraordinary place. It is a private island and is one of the few locations where one can still see the rare aquatic antelope from camp and by boat, which is the main activity here in addition to walking on the island. It is deep Okavango Delta and, as such, is rich in birding. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day. The camp is named after the rare sitatunga antelope, which can be seen here, along with an abundance of wildlife that include elephants, crocodiles, hippos, and countless species of birdlife. All the building materials have been salvaged and repurposed, allowing the camp to blend seamlessly into the natural environment. Set on a deck high in the ebony trees offering both shade and optimal wildlife viewing, the camp has been built using thick recycled woods, traditional thatch, and canvas in a style that echoes the oversized baskets used by the local fisherman. are set on either side of a communal living space among towering Jackalberry trees, which provide shade during the searing summer heat, and produce fruit for creatures from tiny birds and bats to elephants. Set on high wooden decks, and shaded by steeply thatched roofs, each suite has spacious living, sleeping and bathing areas, and a small side deck with a plunge pool, exercise bicycle and chairs from which to view the occasional water antelope browsing in the reeds below. The canvas-walled, wooden-floored interiors are furnished with a medley of pieces collected by the owners from around the globe: Zanzibar doors, Indian carved tables and bedroom screens, a lion carved in Indonesia, grey velvet curtains reminiscent of Venice, contemporary Persian-style carpets, safari-style director’s chairs and leather sofas. Under chandeliers fashioned from rope in the spacious bathroom are double sinks and a Victorian-style bath, alongside a wooden-paneled shower and separate WC. Beds are very comfortable, with netting that’s dropped during turndown. The two-bedroomed family suite has a dining room and an outdoor table for four to enjoy private meals and a second, snug-style living room.
