Londolozi Varty Camp
Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve
Londolozi is a world-renowned, private game reserve spanning 34,000 acres along the banks of the Sand River in the heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. Wild animals move freely across this vast space, offering spectacular game viewing and a true wilderness experience. A Londolozi safari is an immersion into the heart of the wilderness. Breeding herds of elephant and buffalo roam throughout Londolozi, while white rhino and lion concentrations are among the highest recorded on the African continent. Yet it’s the leopards of Londolozi that make it world famous for wildlife and lie at the heart of the Londolozi safari. Over the course of more than four decades, a unique relationship has developed between the Londolozi guides, trackers and generations of wild leopards. Intimate leopard sightings are frequent here, an experience that Londolozi safari guests agree is a pinnacle life experience. Londolozi operates five exquisite camps which offer blissful accommodation, profound vistas, and authentic African cuisine. All Londolozi camps offer the same access to the reserve with some of the best Big Five game viewing in Africa, led by some of the continent’s….
most knowledgeable guides and trackers.
Each Londolozi safari camp varies in levels of exclusivity. The Private Granite Suites are the crème de la crème of the Londolozi portfolio, followed closely by Pioneer Camp and Tree Camp, who all carry the prestigious global standard of excellence – Relais & Châteaux. Founders Camp and Varty Camp are orientated towards families on safari and larger groups of up to twenty travelers.
Londolozi Varty Camp is the heart and soul of Londolozi. This original camp is a tapestry of brick paths, dolerite rock walls, waterfalls and tangled vines echoing simple spaces with unencumbered river view backdrops. Raised off the ground under a lush tree canopy and overlooking scenic riverine bushland, the property is filled with contemporary African art, and features a cocktail bar and dining area, an expansive deck, pool, gym, kids’ club, and spa.
The ten chalets all have private swimming pools and thatched salas framed by timber decks that overlook the riverine bush. The living spaces are raised off the ground and shaded under a cathedral of trees. The camp has a pleasingly down-to-earth quality and the emphasis on family heritage means that children always have a place at Varty Camp.
Many Londolozi guest activities can be found within the surroundings of Varty camp. These include the guest gym, photographic studio and Living Boutique. Guests from all camps are invited to make use of these facilities as well as the Yoga Deck situated next to Founders Camp.
Also found within Varty Camp is the Healing House – a concept that takes you beyond the spa, with a beautiful return of wellness to wildness. Bodywork (massage) and specialized alternative wellness treatment facilities are available. The charming “original Sparta Camp” is also located in the heart of Varty Camp representing where Londolozi began in 1926.
Game drives at Londolozi are taken by professional, passionate and knowledgeable rangers and trackers, who amongst them have a wealth of 350 years of experience. With over 34,00 acres of traversing wilderness, no two game drives are ever the same. Trackers sit up at the front of the Land Rover looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers drive with astonishing skill into ravines and through thicket in pursuit of elusive animals, simultaneously wowing guests with their outstanding knowledge and unforgettable stories.
On returning from the morning game drive and fortifying yourself with breakfast you can either retire to the cool sanctuary of your chalet or indulge a myriad of bushveld activities before the late afternoon game drive. Options include guided bush walks, wellness treatments, stargazing, birdwatching and Shangaan cultural visits or the less energetic can simply curl up with a book from the Camp’s library. Many activities can be found within a short walk from Tree Camp. These include the Guest Gym, Photographic Studio and Living Boutique as well as the restorative Healing House.
